Copenhagen Trains – Vandal Tactics (A3)

So I think I must have watched this trailer about a hundred times by now. Copenhagen Trains: Vandal Tactics is a soon to be released graffiti movie documenting the train scene in Danish capital city Copenhagen, and in particular a tribute to the 2nd generation S-Trains of Copenhagen, those infamous red steel monsters that were the object of desire for generations of writers all across Europe and the world, the last of which was retired from service in 2007.

Nearly 10 years in the making, Vandal Tactics is the fourth and final edition of the Copenhagen Trains series, which started out on VHS tape in the mid 90s. The series has featured all the greats of the Dansk graffiti scene as well as countless guests from all over Europe and the world.

As well as fucking dope Dansk graffiti footage, Vandal Tactics also has an amazing electro soundtrack produced by some of my homeboys in CPH. The soundtrack was written and produced especially for the Copenhagen Trains DVD, consisting of 10 tracks of dark and heavy analogue electro. The drums are raw and lo-fi, and all synth parts are hand played giving it a tense and edgy feeling which perfectly capture the atmosphere; tracks “so fat you can almost smell the rusty tracks and feel your fingers stick to the cap”.

The soundtrack was released as a 12″ on Copenhagen electro label Cytown Records (who also released an AMAZING Nancy Fortune track produced by The Seducers along with several other great 12″s)

The DVD will be released soon, I for one am hanging out for my copy! A little bird also tells me that I will soon be interviewing Copenhagen graffiti God Cave for Cold Crush. So you know the motherfucking scope, stay tuned for the rawness baby!

Hip hop today might be full of wack commercial toys, shit, some cats even say hip hop is dead. But when I hear tracks like Got The Fever from NYC’s Meyhem Lauren, I can feel good in looking them in the eye to say you don’t know shit son!

Since bursting onto the scene as a guest on J-Love’s King of What I do Vol 6 mixtape back in 2004, Meyhem Lauren aka Mey Lo has worked with cats like Kool G Rap, Ol’ Dirty Bastard (RIP), Large Professor, Cormega, M.O.P and Thirstin Howl III just to name a couple, and his upcoming street album Self Induced Illness boasts an impressive cast of guest appearances from some of hip hop’s most legit.

Got The Fever is a graffiti artists love song to the streets. A member of NYC’s infamous Smart Crew, Meyhem Lauren knows what’s up and it shows in his dope and authentic lyrics. In this age of radio hip pop wackness, Mey is rocking pure uncut rhymes for the street, saying fuck you to commercial suckers and letting real cats know loud and clear that the real shit is back.

Like a dope beat produced by Icerocks with tight rhymes from Mey Lo ain’t enough, the video clip, produced by Tom Gould is nothing less than epic: pure street level rawness with an all-star cast of some of NYC’s finest graffiti writers doing their thang on the streets of New York. Witness dudes like Marty & Dceve, Desa: Million Dollar Vandal himself, Adek and JAone out for action: rugged street bombing, trucks, throwups and tags tags tags. New York fuckin’ city baby! It doesn’t get much doper.

Meyhem Lauren – Got The Fever

My homeboy Spate hooked me up this link to Nightcrawla, a site dedicated to Philadelphia graffiti with emphasis on hardcore street bombing and Philly wickeds. Basically, some next level shit — menacing tags turning handstyles into wildstyles, even many writers find Philly tags illegible due to their complex letterforms, huge flares, tags that sometimes reach several metres high as well as smoking spliffs and brandishing butterfly knives. Heat. These cats rock can control in their tags that toys don’t even achieve in their pieces. Check it out at Nightcrawla Philadelphia Graffiti. The navigation is a bit frustrating but there is some primo shit if you can be bothered to lurk through it.

B-Boys B-Ware… Cold Crush is the electro funk driving ya’ll crazy and it is back this Friday night at 202 boogie down Broadway. We got Melbourne mix master Hysteric, the Cold Crush Mob — that’s me, OSC-001 and Simon Caldwell, and special guest, boogie king Sage One. We are gonna have asses shaking and bodies poppin’ and lockin’ from 9pm till late. We got more bounce to the ounce baby!

I just did an interview with Hysteric last night, and posted a fresh electro mix from him for Cold Crushin’ Mixes. Dude has been collecting records and doing his thang for many years now, so it’s a pretty cool interview for anybody into electro or record collecting… check it out over at Cold Crush.

I also just wrote an article for Cold Crush on punk pioneer and Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren, who you may not know also recorded a couple of very cool old school hip hop records. Check it out the Buffalo Gals video clip, it is amazing… featuring bboying by the Rocksteady Crew but what is really incredible is the rare footage of all time graffiti style king Dondi White painting a public style burner reading Buffalo Gals in his trademark funked out style. Dudes letters are untouchable to this day, Style Master General is the word!
